Just cities demand everyone’s participation, which is why Van Alen creates unconventional coalitions amongst community leaders and diverse professionals who share that goal.
Our first annual Collective Visioning, presented with FLOX Studio, brought together community leaders and design justice champions across disciplines. Together we discussed the nature of “value” in our communities — who defines what it is, and what happens when there are differences of opinion amongst residents, developers, and the municipality? Our anchor storytellers — Jing Liu, SO-IL; Miguel Robles-Duran, Urban Front and Parsons; Charles Wallace Thomas IV, US Department of Energy; and Matthew Washington, Phipps Houses — also shared their perspectives on emerging economic models, design drivers, and modes of activism that can bridge gaps in communities.
