Elissa Black is the Managing Director of Van Alen Institute. As a long standing arts manager and attorney, Elissa has over eleven years’ experience working with New York’s leading non-profit arts and cultural organizations in the areas of organizational development, strategy, capacity building, board development, real estate, intellectual property, sponsorship, joint venture and structuring arrangements, staff and labor issues, evaluation and program development.
Prior to joining Van Alen, Elissa led project management of the Guggenheim Museum’s largest and most innovative international cultural initiatives, working with artists, curators, cultural organizations and partners in Asia, Europe and the Americas to realize complex and multifaceted projects across the globe.
Elissa is a graduate of the Teachers College, Columbia University master program in arts management, and was previously an adjunct professor in that program teaching fundraising and organizational sustainability. Elissa also holds a Bachelor of Arts (majoring in Fine Arts Critical Theory) and Bachelor of Laws (Juris Doctor) from the University of Sydney, Australia.
