This month Van Alen Book Club will journey into Open City, Teju Cole’s celebrated debut novel. Join us as we follow Julius, a psychiatry fellow at Columbia from Nigeria as he wanders the streets of New York City. As Julius navigates the urban grid, we will discuss the various people and adventures he encounters and reflect on the profound impression cities can make when we adopt the lens of a “strolling spectator.”
The discussion will be moderated by Janet Zong York. Janet is a PhD candidate in English at Harvard University. Her research focuses on how particular institutions generate concepts of world literature and global citizenship and translate them into practice. Janet’s writing has been published in the Journal of Transnational American Studies. She teaches courses on American literature, including topics of immigrant and expatriate writing, war fiction and globalized memory, and Asian American literature. She earned a BA with honors in English and International Relations from Brown University. Prior to pursuing her PhD, she worked in communications at the US-China Strong Foundation.
Open to new and returning participants.
Food and beverages will be provided.
