Street Value and Manhattan Projects: An Exchange
6pm
This summer has seen the release of two important new books that revisit New York's planning history, Manhattan Projects: The Rise and Fall of Urban Renewal in Cold War New York by Samuel Zipp and Street Value: Shopping, Planning, and Politics on Fulton Mall by Rosten Woo and Meredith TenHoor with Damon Rich. Join three of the involved authors and moderator Sharon Zukin of CUNY and author of the book Naked City: The Death and Life of Authentic Urban Places for a conversation about the politics of redevelopment. In Manhattan Projects, Samuel Zipp sheds new light on issues of urban renewal, looking at the cultural politics behind the United Nations Headquarters, Stuyvesant Town, Lincoln Center, and public housing in East Harlem. In Street Value, Rosten Woo, Meredith TenHoor, and Damon Rich recount the repeated attempts to renew Fulton Mall in spite of the continued exuberance of life and commerce on this fabled Brooklyn Street.
