Is it Architecture? The Structure in Landscape
Panel Discussion presented by Architecture Omi
Thursday, May 14, 2009, 6:30 – 8:30pm
at Van Alen Institute
Van Alen Institute is pleased to host Architecture Omi in presenting “Is it Architecture? The Structure in Landscape.” The evening brings together a distinguished panel of creators and theorists to consider what differentiates and what unites architecture and sculpture, and more importantly, what issues qualify the act of intervening in nature. Upon what bases are these interventions conceptualized? How is the definition of ‘use’ incorporated in the design concept? What is the role of ‘landscape’ in the overall design mission? Where does the term ‘art’ fit into the equation? How, why, and where are the artistic boundaries blurring?
The panel will be comprised of Anthony Vidler, Dean of the Irwin S. Chanin School of Architecture at Cooper Union; Max Protetch, art and architecture gallerist; Alice Aycock, monumental and new art forms sculptor; Christopher Sharples, principal at SHoP Architecture; professor Oliver Kruse, artist and executive board member of Insel Hombroich Architecture Park, Dusseldorf, Germany; and Lindy Roy, principal and proprietor of her own firm. The panel will be moderated by Lee H. Skolnick, FAIA, Chairman of the Architecture Omi board.
The Architecture Omi program looks at 21st century themes inherent in the new disciplinary territory which is evolving at the intersection of art, architecture and the environments they share. Architecture Omi has 120 acres of pristine land in the rural Columbia County region of the Upper Hudson River Valley. The open land is adjacent to The Fields Sculpture Park at the Omi International Arts Center, which oversees the sites, grounds and trails in Ghent, NY. In addition to this program, Art Omi operates six international residency programs in writing, music, choreography, visual art and children’s art classes throughout the year. Visit www.artomi.org or contact executive director Peter Barton (pbarton@artomi.org) for more information.
This program is limited to Van Alen Institute members and invited guests of Architecture Omi. The event is now full! Please RSVP to architecture.OMI@gmail.com if you would like to be added to the waiting list.
