Bronx River Crossing at the Waterpod
A Presentation by New York Prize Fellows Alexander Levi and Amanda Schachter

4:30–6:30pm
aboard the Waterpod at Brooklyn Bridge Park

Van Alen Institute is pleased to present the second public installment of Bronx River Crossing (BRX), a project by New York Prize Fellows Alexander Levi and Amanda Schachter, on Friday, August 7th at 4:30pm aboard the Waterpod in Brooklyn Bridge Park. Following their successful canoe trip down the Bronx River in June with the BRX Watershed Raft-- a large-scale model of the Lower Bronx River Watershed made entirely from recovered materials-- Levi and Schachter will extend the Raft's journey on August 7th by kayaking down the East River from Hunts Point through Hell's Gate, arriving at Brooklyn Bridge Park to meet the Waterpod. To celebrate and complement this leg of the Raft's inter-borough itinerary, Levi and Schachter will convene contributing students, teachers and youth to recount the making of the Raft and to reflect on BRX as it aims to reposture the Bronx River as the ecological and cultural spine of its surrounding community.

In addition to the presentation of BRX, viewers will have the opportunity to explore the Waterpod, a 30-by-100-foot barge that functions as a self-sustaining, water-based mobile living space. For further information on the Waterpod, please visit www.thewaterpod.org.

The Waterpod will be docked at Pier 5, Brooklyn Bridge Park. Pier 5 is located at the end of Joralemon St., at Furman St, underneath the Brooklyn-Queens Expressway. For directions, click HERE.

BRX WATERSHED RAFT VIEWING EN-ROUTE TO BROOKLYN BRIDGE PARK
On Friday, August 7, Erik Baard, founder of the Long Island City Community Boathouse will lead 20 of the BRX participants via sea kayak from the Raft's current docking station in Hunts Point Riverside Park to Brooklyn Bridge Park. If you wish to follow the BRX Watershed Raft as it journeys down the East River, Levi and Schachter have provided a map and timeline with suggested stopping points for best viewing, including Roosevelt Island and the Queensboro and Williamsburg bridges. To download the map, please click HERE. Please note that times are approximate, and actual times will depend on weather and river conditions. Given inclement weather, please contact Alexander Arroyo (aarroyo@vanalen.org) for further details.
