INTERNSHIPS

Interns and volunteers are central to the success of Van Alen Institute's programs and operations. Program-specific opportunities are posted as they arise, however we welcome applications year-round from students or recent graduates who are familiar with the Institute's mission and interested in working with the VAI team. Responsibilities range from office and gallery administration to research, writing and project installation—applicants should be flexible and eager to take on a broad range of tasks in a collaborative work environment.

Van Alen Institute's internship program offers the opportunity to gain work experience and design knowledge at one of New York's leading cultural organizations, and provides direct exposure to some of the most exciting research and innovation related to design in the public realm.

If you are interested in being considered for a Fall 2008 internship at Van Alen Institute, please email a resume, cover letter and writing sample to vai@vanalen.org with "Internship" in the subject line. Please note any special technical or digital skills you may have.

GALLERY AND PROGRAMS INTERNSHIP
Spring 2010

Van Alen Institute is seeking interns to assist in management and administration of the Institute's gallery and programs. The majority of VAI’s programming is hosted at the Institute’s gallery, located in Manhattan’s Flatiron District. VAI’s program includes exhibitions, roundtable discussions, talks, public interviews, seminars, workshops, and performances, and features content representative of the breadth of the Institute’s interests in the intersection between public design and civil society. Programs and related events may highlight work produced by our New York Prize fellows, reference material from our Design Archive, or present independent projects in collaboration with local design firms, universities, government agencies, and other resonant non-profit organizations.

Basic responsibilities include gallery supervision, greeting gallery visitors and answering general questions about a current program; set-up, recording, and breakdown of programs; answering the office phone and general email account; and maintaining an up-to-date Institute contact list and calendar. Further responsibilities will be determined based on the Institute’s programmatic needs and an applicant’s relevant experience and skills, and may include: exhibition installation, publications organization and cataloguing, digital media editing for publication (web, print and promotional) and archival purposes, program-related research, communications and outreach, and maintenance of VAI’s web presence.
