Project Proposal
The project proposal is a description of the public project to be developed and presented during the fellowship term, and the accompanying research to be conducted by the candidate at the Institute. Candidates are encouraged to be as specific as possible in the project proposal and include descriptions of the following:
significance of research/project topic to public architecture, project format(s) and site(s) with clear articulation of the nature of its engagement with a public audience, importance of public component of project to candidate’s broader research and practice, all project deliverables with plans for coordination and execution, plans for outreach and dissemination, and present status of research/work related to the proposed project. For projects proposed outside of the Institute’s gallery (i.e., public park, street, storefront), candidates must sufficiently demonstrate their understanding of the necessary procedures for securing permissions to present their project at the site, and also account for these steps in the project budget and timeline.
The project proposal must be submitted on 8.5”X11” pages and cannot exceed 2500 words. Images can be incorporated into the proposal, but should not supplant explanatory text. Digital media may accompany the written proposal in the form of a CD or DVD. Digital content must be viewable on a PC using Powerpoint (maximum 20 slides, presentation not to exceed 20MB file size), Windows Media Player or Quicktime (maximum 5 minute video). If additional project personnel are named in the written proposal, candidates are asked to include brief bios (50-100 words) for each as an appendix to the proposal.
All candidates who wish to be considered for one of the Institute’s Partnered Resident Fellowships must meet the following additional project proposal requirements.

For projects proposed outside of the Institute’s gallery (i.e., public park, street, storefront), candidates must sufficiently demonstrate their understanding of the necessary procedures for securing permissions to present their project at the site, and also account for these steps in the project budget and timeline.

Project Budget
The project budget is a detailed estimation of expenses necessary for the implementation of the project. The format of the budget should follow the sample project budget and instructions provided. The budget is critical in assessing project planning and feasibility. Van Alen Institute provides support in the range of $2,500 to $10,000 for the implementation of Fellows' projects. The Institute will determine the final amount to be awarded based on the candidate's budget and on other considerations in the project proposal. The Institute encourages candidates to seek additional outside funding for their projects. If a project has already secured other funding, sources and amounts should be clearly indicated in the budget.
Note that while the Institute provides up to $10,000 project support, the total project budget can exceed this amount. Candidates whose projects fall into this category must demonstrate in the budget that additional funding has been or will be secured for the project's implementation.

Project Schedule
The project schedule is a detailed timeline for the project’s planning and implementation. Candidates must demonstrate their ability to develop and present projects within the applicable fellowship term: three months for Van Alen Institute Resident Fellowships, eleven months for the VAI-SSRC Partnered Fellowship. Because projects may be proposed as an ongoing component or a deliverable outcome of fellows’ research, they may take place at any point during the fellowship period. Projects will vary in scale and complexity, and it is understood that candidates will be at various stages of development of their projects at the beginning of their fellowship term. Whenever applicable, the project timeline should clearly situate the fellowship term within a larger timeline of the project’s development so as to clearly indicate the project’s status at the beginning of the fellowship term. Candidates will not be judged on the status of project completion, only on the feasibility of the project’s execution during the fellowship term.
All candidates who wish to be considered for the VAI-SSRC New York Prize Fellowship in Architecture and the Social Sciences should provide a timeline that coincides with the 2008-2009 fellowship year (September 15 th, 2008 - August 15, 2009.) Candidates’ timelines should incorporate a Fall, Spring, or Summer residency period at the Institute during which time they are expected to engage in more intensive planning and production of their proposed public project. Candidates should also propose a specific timeframe for the presentation of their project to take place at any point(s) during the fellowship term, but prior to August 15, 2009. |

All candidates are asked to submit a portfolio that represents their professional, artistic or scholarly work beyond the scope of their project proposal. Formats and contents of the portfolio will vary depending on the candidate's field of expertise. Portfolios should not exceed 12" X 18" and may include writing samples, images, clippings and other forms of documentation and supplementary material. Digital media can be included in the portfolio in the form of a CD or DVD. Digital content must be viewable on a PC using Powerpoint (maximum 20 slides, presentation not to exceed 20MB file size), Windows Media Player or Quicktime (maximum 5 minute video). All collaborative work included in the portfolio should clearly note the candidate's role in the production of the work.

2 Letters of Recommendation
The Institute requires two letters of recommendation from professional or academic colleagues with knowledge of the candidate's work, qualifications, and potential. Candidates should download the recommendation form and review the instructions. Candidates are encouraged to provide recommendors a copy of their project proposal so that they can speak specifically to the work proposed at the Institute. Recommendations can be mailed with application package or under separate cover, but must be received by the Institute no later than 5:00 p.m., March 7, 2008 April 18, 2008. |

Incomplete applications will not be considered. All support materials must be clearly marked with the applicant's name. Primary application materials, including letters of recommendation, should be submitted in English.
For joint applications, all individual parties must meet eligibility requirements, all parties must submit application forms and curriculum vitae, materials must sufficiently demonstrate collaborative nature of work, and all application materials must be submitted in one package. Joint applicants share one fellowship award.
