FELLOWS Resident Fellows
John Stuart
PROJECT TITLE: TimeZone
TERM: 5.15.2008 – 8.15.2008
PROJECT AREA: INFORMATION AND COMMUNICATION

TimeZone proposes a series of low-cost, interactive, lightweight "building blocks" that provide direct video communication between individuals of socially and economically diverse backgrounds whose daily routines are aligned along a single time zone. TimeZone addresses the potential for public spaces to stimulate group dialogue and revitalize public activities across cultures and languages. The building blocks use wireless and sensor technologies to facilitate interaction between users, and they are designed for maximum durability and accessibility at minimum cost. The blocks may be suspended or stacked, used alone or composed into spaces of multiple configurations.

During his fellowship term, Stuart will install prototypical TimeZone blocks at Van Alen Institute's gallery in New York and at The Wolfsonian-FIU on Miami Beach. He has assembled an interdisciplinary team of collaborators to explore the project's construction and implementation, including: Phillip Anzalone, Technical Director of the Avery Digital Fabrication Laboratory at Columbia University; Cory Clarke, partner in the New York-based online design firm, TenderCreative.Com; Eto Otigibe, Miami- and New York-based kinetic artist/mechanical engineer and graduate of the MIT Media Lab; Jen Song, coordinator of school visit programs at the Museum of Modern Art; and London-based designer Cyril Manyara. They plan to coordinate, observe and analyze the types of engagements individuals have with the project and with each other, and use this information to develop TimeZone for implementation along greater distances and involving more diverse communities.
